The only writer's home in Russia that is still a genuine, lived-in communal flat. Dovlatov grew up here, became a writer here — then left for America and rebuilt this apartment from memory, book by book.
In 1944 a three-year-old boy named Seryozha was brought to apartment 34 at 23 Rubinstein Street. He grew up in its long, gloomy corridor and became a writer in the room with the tiled stove — where he drank port wine with Joseph Brodsky. Then he left: first for Tallinn, then for New York. He never came back. The apartment didn't take it personally; it simply went on living.
It is still a working communal flat. Behind some doors — the museum: Dovlatov's room, his neighbours' rooms, the kitchen, the corridor. Behind the other doors — real neighbours and real life, which is exactly why the museum opens by appointment only, for small groups, like a visit to someone's home. Which it is.
The apartment draws visitors from far beyond Russia. In August 2026, Swedish journalist and documentary filmmaker Erik Klefbom — thirty years in journalism, a Moscow-accredited correspondent in 2006–2007 — came from Stockholm to record the museum's first-ever interview for foreign media — for Pusjkinland, his portal introducing Swedish audiences to Russian culture.
